Hampshire v Team Middlesex U18s
|Date:||Sunday 25 Oct 2015e|
|Result:||Hampshire 40, Middlesex 8|
In the first county match of the season, Team Middlesex travelled down to Farnham to play Hampshire.
Middlesex had a nightmare start by conceding two quick tries in the first 5 minutes. Nerves had to settle quickly and we began to find our feet. We unfortunately missed our first chance of points as a penalty slipped just wide of the post. Middlesex soon then realised that at this level missed tackles are costly and when combining missed tackles occur points are inevitably scored against you.
Towards the end of the first half Middlesex began to find their feet and hold their own in all aspects of the game. We applied pressure in small spells in the first half and eventually got on the score board with a penalty. In the final 5 minute of the first half we applied a lot of attacking pressure on Hampshire but could not get the vital try that would have bought the inner belief out of all the players. Things were not helped with enforced replacements early on. Head injuries and arm injuries are serious injuries and subs were made early on in the game.
The half time score was 33 v 3 to Hampshire.
The second half was a different game. Middlesex did find the inner belief and dug deep. Harry was a constant threat playing at scrum half and Josh, playing at full back, was lethal when given time and space to run at Hampshire. Josh even had a spell at fly half to try and pose a different attacking question at Hampshire. The try finally came in the corner scored which was nothing less than what Middlesex deservedly.
Final result: Hampshire 40 Middlesex 8
Middlesex showed real determination and passion throughout the game – a credit to all the boys that took the field. A tough game next week which we need to start better than we did this week. But if we can perform as we did in the second half we will all be pleased at the end of the day.
