Surrey v Team Middlesex Women
|Date:||15th May 2016|
|Venue:||London Irish RFC|
|Competition:||RFU Women’s County Cup|
|Result:||Surrey 22 V Middlesex 15|
Team Middlesex Women came within ten minutes of qualifying for the semi-finals, but it was not to be as Surrey scored two late tries to shade a close encounter.
Middlesex started quickly and stunned Surrey with a number of strong carries from the forwards. Constant Middlesex pressure was rewarded when number 8 Liz Crake finished a good team move with a powerful run to score her third try of the county season. With no recognised kicker in the squad Middlesex had to settle for a 5-0 lead.
Middlesex failed to add to their lead despite constant pressure in the first quarter. Surrey began to get a foothold in the match and scored two quick tries from well worked moves off of scrums, converting one, to take a 12-5 lead.
The half continued as a very tight, tense affair with both teams’ defences rock solid. Middlesex managed to score with five minutes left in the half. After strong carrying from the forwards the ball was moved down the back line, Katie Alder made a superb outside break rounding her opposite number and drawing the fullback before offloading to Rachel Parry who went over to make the halftime score 12-10 to Surrey.
The second half was a tight, tense affair with both teams putting in powerful displays, it took 20 minutes for the first score of the half. The Middlesex back carved open the Surrey defence, Parry and Alder combined to execute a superb two v one in the tightest of spaces with Alder going in the corner.
Middlesex were just five points shy of what they needed to progress but as time ran out Surrey scored two tries late on to take the victory.
Head coach Ross Boshier said, “I couldn’t have asked for more from the players today, they gave everything possible. Obviously it’s disappointing to not make it through to the knockout stages but the players have really developed over the last seven weeks. I’d like to thank the players, coaches and backroom staff at Middlesex for all of their efforts.”
