Team Middlesex Women v Kent
|Date:||Sunday 1st May|
|Result:||Middlesex 30, Kent 36|
Team Middlesex Senior Women started their season with an exciting yet disappointing defeat to Kent at Staines. Early signs were good as Middlesex dominated from the off with centre Anna Glyn-Davies scoring from close range in the corner to lead 5-0. However, Middlesex then lost scrum half and kicker Michaela Dorrian to ankle injury after just seven minutes. Kent then capitalised on some ill-discipline and poor defending to score twice in quick succession converting once to lead 12-5.
Middlesex hit back when Glyn-Davies picked off a pass in midfield, drew both cover defenders and produced a sublime back of the hand offload to captain Alice Sheffield to reduce the arrears to 10-12. This was short lived as a mismatch in defence left the Kent 13 with two props to beat in the backline; she ghosted through take the lead to seven.
Again Middlesex came back and Sheffield scored again after good work from Rachel Berry and Chloe Atkinson to make the halftime score 17-15 in favour of Kent.
After the break Kent took control of the game with another seven pointer to take the score out to 24-15. The lack of kicker and lack of depth at prop was affecting Middlesex, as no. 8 Liz Crake had to be pressed into service as an emergency loose head, with no way of gaining territory through the boot Middlesex were forced to run the ball from everywhere and the strong Kent defence was holding firm. Middlesex rallied through their forwards and a series of strong carries led to Sheffield completing her hat trick.
With the bit between their teeth Middlesex threw everything at Kent, strong running from Orla Hillary, Jo Szczyglowska and replacement Kate Davidson saw Sheffield get over once again. Giving Middlesex the lead 25-24 with 15 minutes to play.
All their efforts to drag themselves back into the lead had tired them, and despite numerous chances to clear under sustained Kent pressure they surrendered their hard fought lead, Kent then put the game beyond doubt with a superb individual break from their fullback this converted for a 36-25 lead with three to play.
Middlesex dug deep, a thirty metre break by Rachel Parry saw the ball taken on by the forwards in midfield after numerous phases the ball was worked down the backline for substitute Rose Dixon to score in the corner with the last play of the game, bringing the final score to 36-30 to the visitors.
Head coach Ross Boshier said after the game, “We didn’t defend well throughout the match and credit to Kent they took their chances and deserved the victory. I was pleased with our determination to keep going until the end and getting two bonus points keeps us in the competition. We’ll regroup during the week ready to put in a performance against Essex.”
