Middlesex Vice President Dick Best is pulling on the Lycra on Saturday 9th September to lead a cycling peloton from Bognor Regis RFC to Harlequins to raise money for his friend Paul Curtis, a former Rosslyn Park, Harlequins and Middlesex player.

Curtis sustained life-changing injuries when his mountain bike hit a tree last September and Best is leading the fundraising campaign to aid his rehabilitation at Rockswood, the Welsh version of Stoke Manderville.  Read more →

Best, not known these days for his athletic prowess, immediately delegated the bulk of the cycle ride to Peter Winterbottom, who accepted the challenge on the proviso that Best led the peloton from Bognor to the Stoop.

“I have accepted the challenge, borrowed a road bike and bought all the gear, including the Lycra, that does wonders for my rapidly disappearing gut!” says Best. “I am training flat out and have stopped smoking.”

The ride is 70 miles door to door and is the first of a series of events being arranged to raise funds for Curtis. Other events include a Grand Slam lunch in the city in March with Eddie Jones and a golf day and finale dinner in May.

The county has already supported the campaign with a donation from the Middlesex Sports Foundation, and donations can be made through the JustGiving website by clicking the link below.

“Please donate whatever you can spare,” implores Best. “It’s going to be a brutal ride and I am beginning to regret taking up this sport, as it’s for people under 8 stone and not 18 stone!”

We will bring you more details (and photos) after the event!
