Sevens rugby is to be used to help integrate local Somali communities with their local rugby clubs. In an initiative set up by the RFU local delivery team for Middlesex and England rugby, the aim is to for each London Borough to compete in a 7s competition in July, which will lead to some of the players moving into the 15-a-side game and playing for their local clubs.
The initiative follows the award-winning work that Middlesex has carried out with the RFU using rugby to engage and integrate the local Muslim community with the Darassulam Mosque in Hounslow. This shows how successful an initiative like this can be.
As a first stage, Somali representatives from ten London Boroughs attended a meeting at Twickenham on 22nd February and were given action plans on how the initiative will be rolled out across London.
